A Day in the Life of a PM NPC
Product management as a loop of context, translation, decisions, and the occasional side quest.
Some days, being a product manager feels like being the NPC who stands at the intersection of several quest lines.
One person arrives with a user problem. Another brings a technical constraint. Someone else has a deadline, a dependency, or a side quest that suddenly became the main story. The job is less about handing out perfect answers and more about keeping shared context alive long enough for a useful decision to happen.
The loop often looks like this:
- Listen for the actual problem.
- Translate between different perspectives.
- Reduce ambiguity enough to make the next move.
- Unblock the path.
- Return tomorrow after the world state changes.
NPCs can look repetitive from the outside. Product work can feel repetitive too—but repetition is where judgment gets trained. Each loop reveals a little more about what people need, what the system can support, and which decision is actually worth making now.
There is rarely one epic cutscene. Mostly, there are many small decisions that help the next useful thing become possible.
